Mind Games

Tricks to enhance your mental abilities and focus.

Today I’m going to give you a simple and effective tool that you can use to increase your productivity, improve your mood, stop procrastination, crush confusion, and bring you closer to your goals. I adapted this idea from one of Paul Reddick’s tips and ran with it to create my own success object. I call it a “Vision Board”. I spoke a bit about creating a vision board briefly in my post 5 Ways to Kick Ass Every Day, and I received some emails that prompted me to go into more detail, so here you go.

Teddy R. No stranger to kicking ass.

In the interest of kicking some ass (remember, I just got re-educated in the field), I thought I’d share some things that I’ve been doing daily with (nearly) religious adherence that have contributed to some asskicking.

None of these things take long, and they’re each going to do what you need to do: Put you one step further ahead.

A while back I was chatting about life and our current culture with one of my clients. This guy is one of the most successful and yet wise and down to earth guys I’ve ever met. He’s lived hard and he’s lived easy. He’s a guy who’s largely made his life into what he wants. He trains his ass off with me and at almost 50 years old and with a lifetime collection of injuries that should almost put him in a wheelchair he’d run 98% of 20 year-olds into the ground on will alone.

He said to me “You know, a while back you said one of the most pivotal things of our relationship and you probably don’t even realize it”. He was right, I couldn’t imagine what I’d said that was so profound, so I had to ask him to clue me in.

*Not a clean, but one hell of a badass picture and close enough!

When you’re as busy as I tend to be it’s important to prioritize and plan your day out. If you don’t you’ll spend the vast majority of your day running around putting out fires and getting nothing done. “Man, he’s so lucky that he was born rich”

“Oh, well, you have a fast metabolism so you don’t have to worry about getting fat”

“That guy doesn’t deserve her (but I do)!”

Do any of those sentences sound familiar? I bet you hear them every day or maybe you even say them yourself. Envy, jealousy, begrudging, resentful, whatever you call it, it’s the same thing: Bullshit.

When it comes to personal development and being the best you can be there’s a lot of “feel-good” hippy crap that gets thrown around.  People talk about wonderful ideals and theories but rarely do the nuts and bolts of the process get addressed. It’s a lot easier to talk about the what when you don’t have to talk about the how, which is what I’m going to do on this site.  One of the topics that comes up a lot in the world of personal development is the idea of “reinventing yourself”.  A lot of guys simply aren’t happy with who they are and how their life is going.  If that wasn’t true then we wouldn’t have a multi-billion dollar self-help industry and an even larger pharmaceutical anti-depressant and anti-anxiety industry.

While I’m predominantly a sports performance coach, I do take on a few non-athlete personal training clients on a very select basis.  One of the coolest parts of my business is that I get to work with these adult trainees who come in, get after it, and are training with me to become better at the biggest sport of all:  Life.
