Make It Happen Monday

Late last week I was bouncing some business ideas back and forth with my boy and Mastermind Brother Chris Reed.

*****A side note: If you’re anywhere near Toronto, Canada I have a couple of key pieces of advice:

1. Get a parka.

2. You NEED to check my boy Chris and his facility out. It’s pretty rare you find a trainer that can bring the holistic (mental, physical, and spiritual) element of true fitness and combine it with legit, tough-as-nails training. He can.

*****

Anyway, so I was kicking some ideas around with Chris and he hit me with probably the biggest shot of wisdom I’d received that day:

I was thinking the other day about the positive and negative attributes of my friends… Yes, I’m that guy.

My sociopathic behavior aside, it jumped out at me that one of my buddies possesses a great quality: He commits to action when he needs to and flows immediately from situation to decision.

He, like all of us, has his share of flaws and, like any good friend should, I inform him of them as frequently as possible. However, when the chips are down you can always count on him to do something.

Like a lot of coaches, I have a handful of “pet” phrases, cues, and quotes that I tend to bring out.  When I’m talking to my clients or having a conversation there are a few that seem to come up pretty regularly.  Usually I don’t notice it or think it’s that obvious until a client starts mimicking one back at me (this is right before I they end up doing extra push-ups).  It’s not that I can’t think of something original to say, trust me, it’s that these cues work.

One of my favorite lines that you’ll never hear me apologize for using is “Strength is a skill”.  I use it a lot, tag most of my emails with it, and firmly believe it.  I’d like to claim that I originated the quote, but I know that I heard it from someone back in the day, but I honestly can’t remember who coined the phrase (if anyone knows then shoot me a line).  Regardless of its root, I think this quote best sums up my training and life philosophy in one succinct message.

I don’t watch a whole lot of television, but last night after the monster Easter feast I sort of plunked down in front of the tube, three-quarters asleep, and zoned out for a while. After a little bit of channel surfing in my carb-induced stupor I came on one of these entrepreneurial shows that sort of caught my interest.

Chef Bobby Flay, of Food Network fame, has apparently got some sort of reality/competition show (Google tells me that it’s fittingly titled: “America’s Next Great Restaurant”) that takes entrepreneurs in the food business and puts them through a variety of challenges, with the winner earning a restaurant chain.

Given that I’m a fan of both food and business, as well as having worked in the bar industry for a long time, this actually kept my attention.

Ok, so that’s a pretty loaded title for Make It Happen Monday but what I want to talk about today is becoming a lost art. There’s an old saying that goes to the effect of “you were given two ears and one mouth, and you should use them in that order”. Most everyone has heard this saying before, but how many people really apply it? It seems that the ears are getting lost in the flapping of everyone’s mouths.

One of the members of the HTKA community just launched his first blog post today and in it talked about taking action and finding success regardless of those who may speak against you. I commented on the post, as you’ll see, adding that in addition to leaving those who try to drag you down behind then you also need to seek out those who do have a congruent mindset.

I’ve written about this before, but I feel that it bears repeating every once in a while because people seem to be afraid to do it. I’m talking about taking the brakes off and cutting the drag lines out of your life. Whether these things that are dragging you down happen to be people, a situation, an item, unnecessary debt, or whatever, it doesn’t matter. If something ruins your day, then it flat-out needs to go.

This weekend I had the opportunity to speak as an alumni and guest panel member at the 2011 HTKA Seminar in Red Bank, New Jersey. I’ve written about the How To Kick Ass Brotherhood, started by Paul Reddick and Zach Even-esh, before and I credit them to really helping me change my life.

As usual, I had a blast and it was great to meet the new brothers of the HTKA fraternity. I was able to both give and receive a lot of advice throughout the course of the weekend and something really struck me on the second day. We were talking about how the HTKA is an ongoing community where even after the seminar we continue to keep in touch and help each other out with advice, referrals, and usually lots of off-color jokes.

This weekend I sat down and went through one of my simultaneously favorite and most hated exercises: I asked myself the tough questions.

Before I get into the questions themselves, I want to talk a little bit about complacency.
