Make It Happen Monday

I’m seriously blown away by how technology has changed our lives and given us opportunity. We live in a terrific age of information and sharing ideas the likes of which have never been seen before. Basically, it’s thanks to the Internet, and it’s pretty awesome.

As much as the Internet is the proverbial Tits, it’s not perfect.

Because I’m one lucky SOB I spent the weekend surrounded by some of the best in the fitness business and some bright new up and comers. As usual, some great information was shared and this time around I pulled a lot of aspects of the proper mindset from it. One presentation in particular really hit me. To be honest, it F’ed me up a little. I’d like to share some of that with you and hopefully you can pull something from it, too.

Help other people“, they say.

Give of yourself“, they say.

If you help other people be better, you’ll be better“, they say.

There’s lots of that type of advice out there from “they”. I’ve even said some of these things myself.

Pretty much every major religion espouses a similar ideal of being a person who lives in service to others. Charity organizations, whether genuine or tax shelters, abound in our society. We even have a “Golden Rule” which states that we should “do unto others as we’d have do unto us“. It all sounds great and most of it revolves around you subjugating your own needs and desires for those of other people.

A little over a month ago I had something happen here at the gym that I don’t experience very often. I had someone join, come in for one session, and quit.

I know this isn’t an earth-shattering event and it happens all of the time in most gyms and training facilities. But it doesn’t happen at Relentless. It doesn’t happen to me.

The end of a year brings about a natural period of reflection and introspection. Depending on how the past year went it also can bring a flash of optimism, satisfaction, relief, soothing nostalgia, or self-loathing. As I sit here at my warm, dry desk on the final weekend of 2012, listening to Nirvana, and watching a light snowstorm coming down out the window to my right I’m feeling a little bit of all of those things.

Which must mean that it’s been a pretty successful year, as those feelings tend only to come from action and change.

2012 was one of the most intense years of my life. I’ve grown and changed in ways that I would have found unbelievable twelve short months ago. I’ve had terrific ups and equally-crushing downs, both professionally and personally. I’m staring at the last wisps of December from the eyes of ten times the man that looked into the preceding January.

Everyone needs a good pump-up speech once in a while, and nobody does it like Ray Lewis.

He’s pissed off for greatness, and if Lewis is pissed off, you’d better pay attention.

It’s Make It Happen Monday. What would you do if there was no tomorrow? What are you holding in the tank?

In the animal world, there’s a natural order of things. Animals are put in basic classes based largely on what they eat and how they do it.

In general it goes a little something like this:

So I’ve been pretty quiet on this site for a while. As I’ve mentioned, I opened up my own training facility and needless to say, that’s kept me pretty busy! Overall, I’m excited for the new opportunity and things are going really, really well. That’s in no small part due to the support I’ve received from a lot of you readers, people I’ve met through the business, and my amazing clients, friends, and family. I’m pretty blessed to have such awesome people in my life.

Ok, now that the nicey-nice stuff is out of the way, I can go back to being my usual acerbic self.

So yeah, I finally did it. After much prodding from my friends, clients, and mentors I saw an opportunity, and realized I’d been not following my own advice by trying to straddle two worlds. I reached down, grabbed my testosterone parts with both hands, and put my shingle out there. Relentless Strength Training officially has a home now. And to the three people I can think of who told me for years that I should “just be a writer because you’ll never own your own facility”: Suck it.

So everything is rosy, right?

I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from my fellow strength coach Matt Lawrence of Ironman Fitness (Check him out):

As of this Tuesday, October 2nd there will be 90 days left in this calendar year.

90 days is plenty of time to make some real, honest changes in your life. By taking it one day at a time you use small steps to add up to big results.

Here are some ideas:

This weekend I took part in the Tough Mountain Challenge at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, ME. That’s right, I ran UP a ski mountain in July! Seriously, this is one of those obstacle course races that have become pretty popular lately, and for good reason: It was awesome!

Let me tell you what, though:
