Most of you probably don’t know this, but I have a pretty strong background in education. I have spent a lot of my working life (non-training) in education. From lecturing and TA’ing undergraduates to working with troubled (but bright) teenagers, I’ve spent a lot of time working as a mentor and teacher. In my current position as a performance coach and trainer I use a lot of those same skills and I think that my desire and ability to teach is what makes me a terrific “coach” over a good “trainer”.

Anyway, in my current iteration of senior trainer (read: curmudgeon) at the facility I’m at now I’ve been mentoring/coaching a few interns over the past year or so. I’ve had a stable of trainers under me before, but working with this group has been different. The pace of this facility is a little slow, and I’m operating on my own, so I’ve been able to really teach as opposed to just coach them into making me lots of money. It’s taught me some great lessons that I think will apply to you in your life, whether you are in a position to teach or not.

courtesy of Calvin and HobbesOk, so this time of year I can be a little bit of a jerk. Granted, I can be a little jerky the rest of the year too, but this time of year really gets to me. Why? Because I work in the fitness business.

And you know what happens during January in the fitness business…

While I’m not a big fan of the “New Year’s Resolution” (just wait for tomorrow’s blog post…) I am a fan of the idea that it represents:

Taking care of business and making changes.

After all, nobody says “This year, I resolve to do exactly what I am doing now and that’s it”. Or, if they do, then to be honest they kind of suck. Instead, the New Year’s Resolution is rooted in the idea of improvement, and that’s the name of the game around here. So without more preamble here’s what’s got me rocking…

Ok, so everyone does the “Best of XXXX year”, “Worst of XXXX year”, etc lists right around the New Year. I have to tell you; They’re my guilty pleasure. Sure, most of them tend to be trash (especially the song/movie/cupcake, etc ones), but sometimes there are some real quality observations to be found floating around this time of year.

Plus, I am at times nostalgic and I love lists, so I suppose it makes sense that I’d be all over these “End of the Year” lists like a fat kid on a cupcake (any one of the Top 10 Cupcakes will do).

So with all that being said, rather than buck the trend, I figured I’d jump right in. You won’t find “Top Ten Exercises” or “Isaac’s Failed Pick-up Lines of the Year” (I’m not THAT nostalgic) here, though. Instead I’m simply going to go through a few points that 2010 really hammered home for me. Several of them were ideas that I thought I knew or had embraced, only to find that I wasn’t living it. 2010 was one of the best years of my life, and I owe it to really getting some of these ideas pounded home through my thick skull.

First of all, I hope that you had a great holiday season.

I didn’t do anything too exciting, just enjoyed spending time with friends and family. I did maintain my yearly tradition of watching the best and most classy of Christmas films: Bad(der) Santa. It was a great, relaxing holiday and just what the doctor ordered. Hopefully yours was equally refreshing.

I’ve been talking a lot about success lately with some of my friends and a couple of my business mentors. There seems to be a handful of different categories that people can fall into when it comes to success.

Last night at the gym I had a great conversation with one of my former professors about life, politics, and success. Like me, he’s a bit on the conservative side so we tend to agree a lot, but regardless of your political leaning, it would be tough to argue with the man’s success. He’s financially stable (I assume), highly educated, loves his job, takes part in lots of fun leisure activities, is civically-active, has a terrific wife, is healthy and fit, and overall seems to be doing pretty well.

We started by discussing a lot of the current issues that our nation seems to be facing today and then shifted more towards challenges that individuals face. We have both come to the conclusion that success is really just a matter of following a formula and it’s a pretty simple one. You ready?

It’s Wednesday, so that means another Rock My World Wednesday! Today I want to talk about a topic that should, and probably will be in the future, its own post: Haters. Everywhere you go, there are people who are going to try to bring you down for no good reason. Maybe it’s jealousy. Maybe it’s because they think they can elevate their status by making you look bad. Maybe it’s just because they’re too damn bored in their everyday life so they need to stir the pot just to have something to do.

Our society is an obsessed one. Whether it’s celebrity lifestyles, the latest electronic gadget, or something related to health, we seem unable to have a passing interest. Instead it becomes the focal point of our lives and dominates both our conversations and the airwaves. Seriously, does it really affect your life that the Prince of England is getting married? Let alone where the marriage will take place and WHAT HE’S WEARING? That stuff makes me sick. I guess when life is too easy you can spend time gossiping and waxing poetic over someone else’s wedding rather than, you know, figuring out how to keep your kids warm and EATING.
