Most of you probably don’t know this, but I have a pretty strong background in education. I have spent a lot of my working life (non-training) in education. From lecturing and TA’ing undergraduates to working with troubled (but bright) teenagers, I’ve spent a lot of time working as a mentor and teacher. In my current position as a performance coach and trainer I use a lot of those same skills and I think that my desire and ability to teach is what makes me a terrific “coach” over a good “trainer”.

Anyway, in my current iteration of senior trainer (read: curmudgeon) at the facility I’m at now I’ve been mentoring/coaching a few interns over the past year or so. I’ve had a stable of trainers under me before, but working with this group has been different. The pace of this facility is a little slow, and I’m operating on my own, so I’ve been able to really teach as opposed to just coach them into making me lots of money. It’s taught me some great lessons that I think will apply to you in your life, whether you are in a position to teach or not.

While I’m not a big fan of the “New Year’s Resolution” (just wait for tomorrow’s blog post…) I am a fan of the idea that it represents:

Taking care of business and making changes.

After all, nobody says “This year, I resolve to do exactly what I am doing now and that’s it”. Or, if they do, then to be honest they kind of suck. Instead, the New Year’s Resolution is rooted in the idea of improvement, and that’s the name of the game around here. So without more preamble here’s what’s got me rocking…

Ok, so everyone does the “Best of XXXX year”, “Worst of XXXX year”, etc lists right around the New Year. I have to tell you; They’re my guilty pleasure. Sure, most of them tend to be trash (especially the song/movie/cupcake, etc ones), but sometimes there are some real quality observations to be found floating around this time of year.

Plus, I am at times nostalgic and I love lists, so I suppose it makes sense that I’d be all over these “End of the Year” lists like a fat kid on a cupcake (any one of the Top 10 Cupcakes will do).

So with all that being said, rather than buck the trend, I figured I’d jump right in. You won’t find “Top Ten Exercises” or “Isaac’s Failed Pick-up Lines of the Year” (I’m not THAT nostalgic) here, though. Instead I’m simply going to go through a few points that 2010 really hammered home for me. Several of them were ideas that I thought I knew or had embraced, only to find that I wasn’t living it. 2010 was one of the best years of my life, and I owe it to really getting some of these ideas pounded home through my thick skull.

It’s Wednesday, so that means another Rock My World Wednesday! Today I want to talk about a topic that should, and probably will be in the future, its own post: Haters. Everywhere you go, there are people who are going to try to bring you down for no good reason. Maybe it’s jealousy. Maybe it’s because they think they can elevate their status by making you look bad. Maybe it’s just because they’re too damn bored in their everyday life so they need to stir the pot just to have something to do.

Welcome to another edition of Rock My World Wednesday! Since it’s a holiday week, I’m going to go the traditional route and theme this week’s edition for Thanksgiving. Yeah, I’m going to be that guy.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with three great strength coaches, Scott Caulfield, Joe Hashey, and James “Smitty” Smith of the Diesel Crew. In addition to picking up a bunch of great little tips and tricks from some of the best minds in the business, it was also great to connect and network with them and some other great coaches. I don’t know about your industry, but in the strength and conditioning world it’s a lot of fun to go to these seminars and hang out with some like-minded people. Back for another week of Rock My World Wednesday! Sorry I’ve been so quiet with my posting this past week; I’ve been in the lab working on a bunch of stuff behind the scenes, so get ready for some crazy stuff in the near future.

That being said, I have had some time to be impressed with some stuff this week. Without further adieu, let’s get to the fun!

One of the coolest things about the internet is the ability for information and ideas to travel and get into the hands of people that want them. As such, one of the things I’ve been wanting to do lately with this blog is to have a weekly list of off-the-cuff thoughts and things that I’m getting into lately.

So I was bumping around Facebook yesterday and one of my friends posted up a picture and link to The Bacon Explosion. Now, as a good, red-blooded American male, there are a couple of things that I hold sacred:

1. Bacon.

2. Doing things with over-the-top dominance.

This is pretty much the pinnacle of both.
