Ask Yourself the Tough Questions – Make It Happen Monday

5

This weekend I sat down and went through one of my simultaneously favorite and most hated exercises: I asked myself the tough questions.

Before I get into the questions themselves, I want to talk a little bit about complacency.

You see, there’s a reason why the tough questions are tough. We as people have a tendency to flow towards comfort and complacency. If things aren’t going too badly then we are often pretty content to just go with the flow, bitch about minor annoyances, and keep doing our thing.

There’s a problem with that, though. We spend our time aggressively avoiding making changes, even if those changes will result in greater success and further pleasure in the long run. In effect, we’re extremely successful at being unsuccessful!

Need to get a little less successful at it? Here are my Tough Questions(tm):

1) Are you truly happy?

2) Assuming you’re not in a state of perfect bliss, are you doing everything in your power to seek that happiness?

3) Are you challenging yourself to get better?

4) Is there a person, situation, or thing that you are allowing to derail your pursuit of happiness and success?

5) Is your eye on the prize, or are you allowing the little steps to keep you distracted?

6) Are you thinking BIG enough?

Asking ourselves hard, pointed questions will often derail that complacency. I mean, how much do you really have to think about the questions? Chances are you already know the answers, you’ve just been avoiding asking the questions.

Drop any questions and answers you need some extra accountability for below!

Hey Mom! (remember, guys: Mom will always check up on you). I was actually thinking about getting the ball rolling by posting up my answers today, so thanks for calling me out!

1) Are you truly happy?
-No, I’m not. I have a pretty good life and I’m definitely a lot improved over where I was a couple of years ago, but I’m not truly happy. I feel that there is so much more for me to accomplish and that drives me on. While I’ll always be looking for challenge and further accomplishment (and happy in that pursuit) there are a few major life changes I’m in the process of making right now that are impeding my day to day happiness, namely location, work situation, and relationships. Overall things are good, even great, but they can improve.

2) Assuming you’re not in a state of perfect bliss, are you doing everything in your power to seek that happiness?
-Here’s the tough question: No, I haven’t been. I’ve been pushing hard, but I haven’t been grinding like I need to. I can buckle down. I can focus less on “doing stuff” and more on following my plan.

3) Are you challenging yourself to get better?
-Yes. I’m pushing myself for improvement in every way – socially, training skill, physical ability, mental toughness, and mental clarity. Each has it’s dedicated time in my day and life.

4) Is there a person, situation, or thing that you are allowing to derail your pursuit of happiness and success?
-You know, not really. There are a few situations that I need to handle, but they’re not totally derailing me. The only person at this point standing in the way of my success is myself; I’ve cut the other negative influences out of my life.

5) Is your eye on the prize, or are you allowing the little steps to keep you distracted?
-This is what I need to keep reminding myself of. Keep your eye on the plan, Wilkins, and if something isn’t going to move you closer to your goals then it needs to be discarded.

6) Are you thinking BIG enough?
-Never. I love my clients and my life, but I need to keep thinking bigger. I can help about 50 people through personal interaction. I need to help 500, 1000, and 5000 through different programs and I know I can do it.

All right, all. Those are my answers. They’re in public and I want you to hold me accountable to them!

The Gauntlet has been thrown down. Let’s see if anyone else will man up and post their answers up!

1- Are you truly happy?
I am truly happy everyday for being healthy and for being born where I was born, a privileged country. Now of course achieving my dream would make me happier, because I’d feel accomplished with something I really want to do.

2- Assuming you’re not in a state of perfect bliss, are you doing everything in your power to seek that happiness?
No because I tend to rely on what’s easier.

3- Are you challenging yourself to get better?
Ummm yeah constantly in my hobby unfortunately my hobby is not what pays my bills. When something annoys me I’d rather just forget about everything and go back to my hobby. I know stupid huh especially when you’re 30…but it makes me happy! ha

4-Is there a person, situation, or thing that you are allowing to derail your pursuit of happiness and success?
yeah I guess the economy.

5-5) Is your eye on the prize, or are you allowing the little steps to keep you distracted?
I think I answered that in question 3. My hobby would be the little steps.

6-Are you thinking BIG enough?
Probably not.

Nice, honest answers, Lucile! The next logical question is: Are you ready to change things?
