About the Blog

This is just a quick overview of who I am and why I wrote The New Polymath.  For a more in-depth look at where I came from check out My Story.

Who’s This Isaac Guy?

I’m a 30 year-old Performance Coach and Personal Trainer rocking things out in Bangor, ME.  Along my travels in life I picked up a Bachelor’s in Finance and a Master’s in Exercise Physiology, lots of initials after my name, some monster college stories, and a hefty student loan bill.

After college I spent four years in Charleston, SC where I learned that I didn’t know everything.  I had some great times and some really, really shitty times.  I made a lot of mistakes and had some great successes, too.  I hit a deep depression and had to learn how to claw my way out of it, or die.  Since I’m writing this, I guess I did all right.

I’ve been training athletes and performance clients for ten years and there’s nothing I love more.  There’s nothing like helping someone overcome barriers, achieve their goals, and become a freak.  My clients are a huge priority to me and their success is my success.  I have so much to thank them for as while I’ve taught them a lot about strength training and changing their bodies, they’ve taught me far more about people and life.

However, all work and no play makes for a boring guy.  This blog actually came about because I feel that today’s man is spending too much time as a specialized wage-slave and not living the life that he wants and maximizing his potential.  I personally pursue a variety of hobbies from reading and writing (obviously) to gardening, powerlifting/strongman training, and going to rock shows.  There’s nothing worse than asking someone “What do you do?” and have them say “I’m a <insert mundane occupation here>”, and after further questioning that’s still all they can come up with as their identity.  That’s not a man, that’s an insect.  A soft, weak insect.  I don’t have room for them here.

Things I Like:

-Heavy weights
-Dry, witty humor
-Beer, stouts in particular
-Movies (with a special place in my heart for zombie movies)
-Business books
-In-depth, nit-picky nutrition studies
-Fit, muscular women
-Wild Turkey
-Smart, educated discussion (unless you’re a pretentious douchebag)
-Anything done so well it can be considered “art”.

Things That Piss Me Off:

-People with their heads in the sand
-Pink Dumbbells
-The color pink (I’m color-blind and I live in constant fear of thinking that I’m wearing gray and actually wearing pink.)
-Whiny, namby-pamby theorists
-Half-assed things
-Long commutes
-Slow internet connections
-Shitty art
-Birds (Other than eating them.  I’m a big fan of that.)
-Ice in my drink

What This Blog Is All About

When I sat down to start this blog, after a lot of introspection on whether to write it in the first place, I had to decide what I really wanted to say.  So, without further preamble, here it is:

Be a man.  Be awesome at it.  Be proud of it.

A “polymath” is the Greek term that means “having learned much”.  Basically, it’s the Greek Renaissance Man, and that’s what being a man is all about to me.  Being a Renaissance Man, that is, not necessarily being Greek (not that there’s anything wrong with that).  I believe that if a man is not well-rounded, self-examined, and developed across multiple disciplines then he’s failing at life, and we’re not  in the business of failing here.

There.  Now that we’ve got the premise out of the way I’m going to go over what this blog ISN’T.

This blog is NOT the following:

-This is not a pure fitness blog, although I believe that strength starts with the physical so we’ll talk a lot of muscle.

-This is not a Pick-up Artist blog.  I’ll definitely talk dating and how to attract (and keep) women, but it’s not a player blog.

-This is not a finance blog.  Financial security, wisdom, and development is part of being a great man, so we’ll address it at times but this isn’t a stock-advice forum.

-This is not a self-help or psychology blog.  I’m not a shrink.  I don’t intend to be a shrink.  I’m here to show you some of the best methods I’ve found to be a more successful man.  What you do with them and whether or not they work for you is up to you.  If you want to be patted on the back and told to recite “I love myself and so others will too” 47 times, then go somewhere else.

-This is not a blog about music, art, or gadgets.  I love cool stuff, and as a well-rounded man so should you.  So I’ll share some stuff that I think is cool from time to time.  However, this isn’t Best Buy.

-This is not a political debate blog.  While I’ll use current events as examples sometimes this is not the place for political bitching and infighting.

-This is not a blog for whiners.  I’m not going to put up with that shit.  Have a problem?  Be a man, address the problem, and find an answer.  Act on that answer and fix it.

This blog IS about the following:

-Overcoming the Pussification of America and building pride and responsibility into men.

-Getting strong as hell in the gym, on the playing field, and in your mind.

-Spitting in the face of adversity, the “norm”, social constraints, and building YOUR LIFE as YOU WANT IT.

-Developing the confidence that you NEED to be a man in today’s world through the use of science, common sense, and modeling of those who’ve succeeded ahead of you.

-Building the Complete Man, or Polymath, and so enjoying culture, music, arts, women, sports, cool stuff, and all that life has to offer.

If all this sounds too tough, too simple, or too insensitive for you, then take your hurt feelings and hit the bricks.  On the other hand, if this sounds like something you can get behind, then stick around and read on.

Thanks, Greg!

That’s my real mission with this blog; Just get out there and give my thoughts and opinions on life. I’m sure I’m not always right, but if my experiences and perspectives can help someone then I’ve done my part. That, and it keeps me on my toes!
