I had an experience yesterday that provided an interesting lesson in perspective and patience that I think bears sharing.

*****I’ll preface this by saying that I’m not known as the most patient of guys when it comes with putting up with bullshit. As every girlfriend I’ve ever had knows, I hate crowds, lines, and shopping. Keep that in mind as you read this. Some of the people who know me personally will get a chuckle out of this story and me being in it, that’s without question.*****

I received an email the other day from a guy who wanted to know my “best tips on gaining muscle but staying athletic”. Well, I have to be honest and say that he’s picked a pretty broad topic that would be hard to answer in a simple email without knowing a lot more about who I was talking to. That being said, one thing I definitely appreciated was that he asked about gaining muscle (good) and staying (or I suppose becoming) athletic (even better).

Look, outside of professional bodybuilding (and there are some exceptions there, too) there is NO reason for a guy to become stiff, slow, and sluggish while building more muscle. Think about it: Muscle mass contributes to strength. Strength is one of the primary contributing factors to power. More strength should, unless you’re doing something very wrong, lead to more power. More power then translates to more athleticism.

Simple, right? And honestly, what dude in his right mind says that he wants to be “less athletic”? None.

Memo to the dudes with the clown pants and gallon water jug: Stiff, slow, and slack-jawed is no way to go through life.

If you ask most people why they aren’t as successful as they’d like to be whether it’s business, fitness, relationships, or what-have-you, chances are you’ll get a variety of responses. The usual suspects something like:

-Not enough time/money/help
-Bad luck
-No opportunity
-I’m too short/tall/skinny/fat

Those are BS. Those are all superficial things that either don’t actually matter or can be overcome.

First of all, I’d like to wish you and yours a happy Thanksgiving if you’re from the ‘States. If you’re not, then you’re missing out and I recommend that you celebrate it anyway. Here’s the down-low: In America we get together on the last Thursday in November to celebrate family, friends, and the other things we’re thankful for. This is punctuated by a harvest feast involving turkey, vegetables, and pie. We also layer on an outstanding helping of football on because we’re Americans and nothing says “thankful” like watching one one of the world’s greatest sports. Like I said, you’re missing out and I’d jump on the bandwagon if I were you.

So in honor of that, I’m thankful for the blessings I’ve received in my life. I’ve been given opportunity, great friends and family, good health, an outstanding sense of humor, and a desire to help others… in my own special way. Honestly, that makes me rich beyond belief already.

In the spirit of what all trainers do on Thanksgiving, I’m going to clue you in to one of my best Turkey Day Survival Tips.

One of the things I do to set myself apart as a strength coach is that I’m always learning and seeking out new information. I usually try to get about an hour of study in every day, and when I’ve got extra time I often go over that. For example, over the Thanksgiving long weekend I read three popular training articles, two journal articles, two books that totally opened me up to some new ideas in nutrition, and watched a couple of videos.

Now, there’s a couple of things to be observed from this.

First, I hope that it shows that I want the absolute highest of successes for my clients, so I’m always looking for ways to give them an edge. Once the basics are covered, life becomes a game of inches, as the saying goes (somebody please post in the comments what that’s a reference to. I’ll hook you up with something just for being cool.), and when it comes to my clients… They get their inches.

Second, I obviously live like a hermit and have no social life. *sigh*

We’re going to go ahead and focus on the first point today and gloss over point number two…
